National Wattle Day with the Indooroopilly Garden Club

National Wattle Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Australia's beautiful floral emblem and recognise the important role wattles play in our landscapes, ecosystems and national identity.

It was a pleasure to join the Indooroopilly Garden Club for a special National Wattle Day celebration and spend the morning with local gardening enthusiasts who share a passion for nature, community and the unique plants that make Australia so special.

A highlight of the event was hearing from Queensland Wattle Association President Mike Gilmour, who shared his extensive knowledge and passion for these remarkable native plants. His insights provided a fascinating look at the diversity, significance and beauty of wattles across Australia.

Guests also enjoyed a delicious wattle seed cake prepared by local small business owner and pastry chef Glen Barratt from In Pursuit of Pastry, a wonderful reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses and celebrating Australian ingredients.

I was also pleased to speak about why wattles are so important to our Australian landscape, our communities and our sense of place. Wattle is much more than a beautiful splash of golden colour each spring. It is a symbol of resilience, connection and the uniquely Australian environments we are fortunate to call home.

Events like this are a wonderful reminder of the incredible community groups we have across the Inner West. Through a shared love of gardening and nature, organisations such as the Indooroopilly Garden Club bring people together, foster friendships and strengthen community connections.
